bikeNOW Mechanic Named Sports Star of the Year

March 3rd, 2010

Leader Sports Star of the Year - Murray Spink

bikeNOW mechanic Murray Spink has been named the 2009 Caulfield Glen Eira/Port Phillip Lead Senior Sport Star of the Year.

Spink, 30, won the Australian Marathon Championship in September last year, outsprinting two other riders to the line to win the race and a wife.

Murray had promised to propose to his fiancee if he won and he stuck to his word, asking Elwood’s Sarah Riley to marry him.

The evening had sports journalist Stephen Quartermain as MC with entertainment from comedian Andrew Startin.

COGS Girls MTB Day – Huge Success!!

March 1st, 2010

Warren demonstrating how to ride downhill.

The COGS Girls group ventured off to Belgrave and Lysterfield for an introductory day to MTB riding.

The day started with a safety brief at Belgrave before heading off towards Kallista to do some “log jumping”!

As you can see from the pics below all the girls soon became skilled at riding over obstacles, but not before some close calls. Warren was on hand to catch any damsels in distress! Lucky Ladies!!!!

From here the group rode the Dargon track through to Lysterfield Park for a brilliantly catered lunch.

The group then headed off and rode the Boys Farm trail.

A great day was had by all with many “non-believers” at the start of the day surprising themselves with how well they adjusted to MTB riding.

A big thanks to Liz O’Dea for organising the day.

Keep an eye on the COGS girls group for details of a road ride in the Dandenong’s next month.

Murray Spink – Australian Champion!!!

February 17th, 2010

Murray Spink claims victory at the Australian National Championships

bikeNOW mechanic Murray Spink has taken out the Australian National Mountain Bike Championships in Bendigo.

Promising his fiancée that he needed to win the national mountain bike title this weekend before they could marry proved the incentive needed for the eventual winner, Murray Spink.

The 30-year-old Melbourne rider rode his heart out to win the tough 105km marathon race in Bendigo. Afterward, he confirmed his wedding date, in two weeks with fiancée Sarah Riley.

It was only in the final metres that Spink outsprinted two riders to the line to win in four hours and 30 minutes.

"I promised Sarah, and I just had to win," said Spink after his win over a strong field with more than a dozen top contenders.

The racers enjoyed almost perfect track conditions after some light rain the night before.

The men’s race saw an early lead group of 12 riders form and by the 80km mark, only four had been dropped. At the last aid station, a split appeared in the leading bunch with only three remaining in the lead, thereby setting up an exciting final sprint. Spink has won all previous events at this location, but said that this win, his first national title, could also be attributed to his focus on training in any weather, course knowledge and his dual suspension bike.

"Everyone wants a jersey. It will certainly go up on the wall," said Spink, who has never lost a race on this course.

Just three seconds behind was Port Macquarie’s Jason English in second place. Victorian Neil Van der Ploeg, who recently won the Tour of Timor, finished third, another one second behind. A disappointed Ben Mather placed fourth after being at the front of the pack while Nick Menager finished fifth – both were just 30 seconds behind the winner.

Veteran John Darcey was the highest placed none-elite category rider in 22nd position.

Check out the gallery of pics from the race.
